Power back on after downed tree causes outage affecting 1,700

MORGANTOWN — For roughly an hour Monday, more than 1,700 area residents lost power, including businesses in the Pierpont Centre on Venture Drive.

At 4:08 p.m., a tree came down on a wire near the intersection of West Run and Stewartstown roads, according to a MECCA 911 official and Will Boye, a spokesperson for Mon Power.

Boye said the outage affected 1,775 customers. Power was restored by 5:16 p.m. Originally, Mon Power anticipated it would take until 8 p.m., but when a crew arrived on scene, they were able to remove the tree and found that no poles were broken or wires torn down.

“They were pleasantly surprised,” Boye said.

Customers and businesses owners likely were as well, as several establishments, including McDonald’s and IHOP at the Pierpont Centre and Mal’s Place, a fruit and vegetable store on Old Cheat Road, experienced power loss.
