‘Fabric is my addiction’: Pockets of Time offers array of sewing, quilting supplies

KINGWOOD — Karen Stone, owner of Pockets of Time, said she owned a fabric shop for 12 years but closed it to become a cook in the Preston County School System.

Stone said in 2020 she decided to go back to being a business owner.

“When I visioned starting my business in January of 2020, I didn’t know about COVID,” she said. “I thought I would open on Easter. That didn’t happen.”
She said she opened her shop in May of 2020 but the county was declared red, and business became very slow. The red designation indicated stay-at-home orders were necessary.

Stone didn’t give up her desire to keep her business going once the lock down was over.

Her shop, Pockets of Time, offers a selection of fabrics and supplies for sewers and quilters.

Among the items that can be found in her shop are fabric, pillow panels, fleece, cotton fabrics for quilting, thread, jelly rolls for quilting squares, scissors and other implements for quilters and sewers.

“Fabric is my addiction,” she said. “I work with several companies, and I’ve also bought fabric for my use from eBay and Etsy.”

Stone said selling sewing supplies is not all she does. She also is takes gift requests.

“I recently made an apron for a customer who wanted it as a wedding gift. I like to sew and create things,” Stone said. “Some of the things I have made for customers has been placemats, a flag for a grave, a small baby blanket and aprons.”

She said if a customer wants an specific type of fabric, she will try to find it for them.

“I had a customer who was making a quilt for her grandson and wanted fabric with a baseball pitcher on it. It was hard to find, but I found a panel with a baseball pitcher and she cut around it,” Stone said.

She said when a customers come into her shop they are also able to find many unique items.

“The fabrics and sewing items belong to me,” she said. “Everything else is consignment. This gives others a chance to put their hand made items out there for customers to see. There is also collectibles, primitives and antiques.”
