MORGANTOWN — Miami (Fla.) Gulliver Prep linebacker Travious Lathan has been one of the top targets on the board for West Virginia since early in the process and the Mountaineers got their man.
The 6-foot-1, 207-pounder committed to WVU over a long list of scholarship offers that included Florida, Nebraska, Michigan, Michigan State, Florida State, Miami (Fla.), Oregon, Tennessee, Georgia, Pittsburgh and Arizona State.
The Rivals.com 3-star prospect took an official visit to Morgantown from June 11-13 and was impressed with the experience but let things marinate for a while before pulling the trigger.
He also took an official visit to Pittsburgh the weekend before, but the Mountaineers surged to the forefront after that experience, getting a complete view of what WVU had to offer.
Tight ends coach Travis Trickett served as the primary point man in the recruitment of Lathan and established a strong bond that was critical in luring him north. The pair was in regular communication leading to securing an official visit and he also spent time with inside linebackers coach Jeff Koonz and coordinator Jordan Lesley during the course of his stay on campus.
Lathan is the type of athletic linebacker who the Mountaineers have prioritized on the recruiting trail and brings speed and the ability to run sideline-to-sideline. He has the ability to not only come up and tackle but handle his job in coverage which makes him an excellent fit for the defensive scheme.
Overall, Lathan continues a summer run for WVU which has seen 12 commitments this summer including 11 of those that took an official visit with the program in June.
The Mountaineers recruiting class is now perched No. 17th nationally according to Rivals.com, which would be the highest mark in the history of the service if signing day was today.
WVU is now up to 17 total commitments in the 2022 class and is still actively in pursuit of several other top targets which are expected to make their college choices in the coming weeks.
The Mountaineers continue to hit on top targets which is never a bad thing on the recruiting trail.
