BRUCETON MILLS — Big Sandy Brewing, a labor of love from Bruceton Mills’ C. Laura Dulaney, will host its grand opening at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 5. Locals and  visitors  are invited.

Dulaney, the owner of another Bruceton Mills business, Padlz Canoe and Kayak Rentals, is known to many of her friends as a home wine maker. She is joined by Mike and Josh Palencar, a father-son duo from Hagerstown, Md.

“Brewing beer is a new concept for me,” Dulaney said. “I am happy to lean on Josh and Mike’s experience and love that we can offer a homemade product.”

The Palencars have deep roots in homebrewing. Mike has owned and operated a successful food and beverage establishment, and together, they bring decades of brewing knowledge to Big Sandy’s taps.

Big Sandy Brewing prioritizes local goods and services and sources its products from nearby vendors whenever it can. The beer is brewed with 100% local grains and malt from CNC malt, a farm co-op just a little over an hour from Bruceton Mills.

“We like the business model of CNC where they get their grains from local farmers, and often, written on the grain bags is the farmer’s name who grew it,” Mike Palencar said.

Big Sandy Brewing offers four homebrewed beers, two commercial beers and two homebrewed sodas. All drinks will be served in a 16-ounce frosted mug.

“We plan to always offer birch beer and to have a second nonalcoholic beverage available based on the season,” Dulaney said. “We currently have a pink lemon bubbles on tap, which is a twist on your typical pink lemonade.”

With a limited menu, currently, Big Sandy Brewing offers Nathan’s all-beef hotdogs. Guests are welcomed to bring their own food or order from other restaurants. Menus to local restaurants are available at the pub.

Those who attend the Big Sandy Brewing grand opening can enjoy samples of beer and appetizers from Pizza Pro.

“We are super happy to be opening in Bruceton Mills and to be part of the community,” Dulaney said. “Great things are happening here, and we love being a part of it.”
