The 35th anniversary of Richwood’s Scenic Mountain Triathlon organized by the Richwood Chamber of Commerce in Richwood, to be held  July 11, is less than a month away but there is still time to register.

This  race is held in the Monongahela National Forest, which lies along the spine of the Appalachian Mountains, making for a scenic view challenging course.

At 23.8 miles, the race begins with a 0.5-mile swim in Summit Lake, followed by a 17.1-mile bike ride from Summit Lake to Cranberry Mountain Nature Center on W.va. 39/55, and ends with a 6.2-mile run from the nature center to the locked gate below Cranberry Glades and back to the finish line at the nature center.

This year Richwood’s Scenic Mountain welcomes back Carl Irwin and family as Team 3-Gen for the 2021 Triathlon. Team 3-Gen consists of swimmer Carl Irwin from Morgantown, biker Elena Irwin from Bexley, Ohio (Carl’s daughter), and runner Isaac Roe from Columbus, Ohio (Elena’s son). In 2019, Team 3-Gen (consisting of Carl, Elena, and Elena’s younger son Elliot) participated together.

This year, Elliot and five of his buddies from Bexley HS are doing their first ever full triathlon at the Scenic Mountain Triathlon and are bringing three more BHS friends and family members as spectators/supporters.

Adults 20  and older can compete to be the next West Virginia USA Triathlon Champion for the adult division. Those 19 and younger can compete without jeopardizing their amateur status.
