Preston SWA plans ecycling event for August

KINGWOOD – The upcoming ecycling event was the main topic of discussion at the Wednesday evening meeting of the Preston County Solid Waste Authority.

The event is set for Aug. 18 at the Civic Center.

Don Smith, who represents the commission on the board, said Infinite Electronics Recycling will be awarded the project.  Infinite Electronics was one of three companies that bid on the project.  The other two were Tri State Escrap and Greenway Computer Recycling.

Infinite Electronics Recycling had the low bid of $6,400; Greenway Computer Recycling bid $8,250 and Tri State Escrap bid $10,750.

Smith said the City of Kingwood will have a 3-ton dump truck on hand to take CRT’s.  He said it will cost individuals $5 per each CRT they bring to the event no matter the size.

Infinite Electronics Recycling will accept the following materials:  AC adapters, portable air conditioners, all types of batteries, cell phones, computers/laptops along with computer/laptop parts and components, docking stations, electrical components, electric motors, film/digital cameras, fans/electrical heaters, gaming systems, small household appliances, household electronics, ink and toner cartridges, keyboards and mice, lawn equipment that is free of gas and oil, LCD monitors and TV’s, light ballasts without florescent or other bulbs, microwaves, medical and lab equipment, networking equipment, personal care items like CPAQ , hair dryers, shavers, humidifiers etc, power strips, printers and copier s, projectors, radios, security cameras, servers, shredders, software, stereo and video equipment, telephones both residential and business, transformers, two-way communication equipment, UPS battery backups, WI-Fi equipment and wires and cables.

In other business, Jay Sowers, county litter officer, said he has been receiving complaints about people burning items.

“Couches and other things are being burned – usually after dark.  I’m going to write tickets,” he said about the incidents.

Sowers also expressed concern about ridding the county of old tires.  He said he currently has 1,200 tires in a trailer and is waiting to get them moved.

He said the current hauler wants out of the contract and he is not sure when he picks up the current load whether or not he will provide another empty trailer.

“Probable not,” Sowers said. “And there is only one other hauler in the state.”
