WVU Cancer Institute to open center at Uniontown hospital

UNIONTOWN, Pa. — Cancer patients in Fayette and Greene counties will no longer have to travel to find the care they need thanks to a new partnership between the WVU Cancer Institute and WVU Medicine Uniontown Hospital to open a cancer center on the second floor of the Annex Building on the hospital’s campus.

“The opening of our new cancer clinic and infusion center makes good on our commitment to bring exceptional cancer care to this community,” Dr. David Hess, CEO of Uniontown Hospital, said. “We are truly blessed to offer the comfort and convenience of specialized cancer treatment right on our hospital campus.”

The new center, which officially opens to patients June 1, will take a multidisciplinary approach to medical oncology care, including chemotherapy and other infusion services, a pharmacy and a lab. Patients will have access to nurse navigation, a telephone triage system for symptom management and prescription refills, cancer registry services, tumor boards and telemedicine appointments.

The clinic will include eight exam rooms, one procedure room, one consult room, one provider workroom, and one station for obtaining patient vitals. The infusion area will include eight private infusion bays with heated massage chairs, two additional swing/flex rooms, and one station for obtaining patient vitals.

“There are certain aspects of cancer care that can and should be provided close to patients’ homes, and medical oncology and chemotherapy infusion services are among them. A cancer diagnosis is already an incredible burden for patients to bear; finding and receiving cancer care should not add to that stress,” Dr. Hannah Hazard-Jenkins, director of the WVU Cancer Institute, said. “We’re honored that patients from Fayette and Greene counties have entrusted us with their care, and we’re thrilled to be able to bring these services to them.”

The opening of the new cancer center was celebrated May 24 with a ribbon-cutting event that included Drs. Hess and Hazard-Jenkins and Albert L. Wright, Jr., president and CEO of the West Virginia University Health System.
