PREP ROUNDUP: Morgantown splits Friday doubleheader with Jefferson

Morgantown High split its Friday doubleheader with Jefferson High, winning Game 1, 6-3, and losing Game, 11-3.

The Mohigans picked up all their runs in the first and second inning, while Jefferson scored a single run in the first, sixth and seventh.

Zach Brennan led MHS at the plate, goign 2 for 4 and accounting for two RBIs. Ty Galusky, Ryan Fluharty and Ethan Smith accounted for one RBI each, and Fluharty accounted for the sixth run on a wild pitch.

Quincy Thornton pitched a solid six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out nine. Fluharty relieved Thornton in the seventh to close out, allowing one run on a wild pitch before striking out the final batter — one of his two Ks.

Sammy Roberts took the loss for JHS, pitching 1 2/3 inning and allowing six runs on six hits. Griffin Horowicz took the mound for the rest of the game, allowing three hits and no runs while picking up five strikeouts.

In Game 2, Jefferson returned the favor, blowing out the Mohigans, 11-3.

Jefferson’s bats started out hot as the Cougars picked up four runs in the first inning following by two in the third. Morgantown responded in the bottom of the third with its only three runs to cut JHS’s lead to three, but the Cougars put up five more runs over the following three innings to close out the win.
Big hitters Zac Rose and Sam Wabnitz led the Cougars at the plate with a 2 for 4 performance and three RBIs a piece. Kamien Gonzalez (1 for 4) tacked on two more RBIs. In total, JHS’s 11 runs came off seven hits.

Domenic Colasonte and Ethan Smith batted in two of the Mohigans’ three runs, each on one hit. MHS totaled its three runs on six hits.

Rose and William Ricketts split the game on the mound, with Rose (3 1/3 ip) allowing four hits and three runs while striking out six and walking four and Ricketts allowing no runs on two hits. Ricketts also struck out six and walked two.

Five Mohigans shared time on the mound with Gregory Eddy taking the loss in 2/3 inning, allowing four hits and runs, one home run and two walks.

Lacrosse

Morgantown 14, Martinsburg 7

Morgantown doubled Martinsburg up in Friday’s meeting, pushing their record to 7-3 heading into the final stretch of the regular season.

Jaxon Fielding and Preston Harman led MHS with four goals each, while Fielding and Daniel Arthurs led the team with two assists.

Goalkeeper Jay Anderson had 12 saves in the win.

Next up, Morgantown hosts Wheeling Park (3-5) on Tuesday at home.

JV baseball

Morgantown 6, Hampshire 5

Hampshire nearly came back from a four-run deficit to defeat Morgantown, but the Mohigans held true to come away with the 6-5 win Friday afternoon.

Morgantown put up two runs in the first three innings, holding the Trojans off the board until they battled back to tie it at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth.

The Mohigans responded in the top of the fifth with four runs, but Hampshire chipped away at the lead with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. A Morgantown goose egg in the sixth gave Hampshire a chance at the comeback win, but the Trojans only picked up one in the bottom of the inning to close play.

Dylan Travinski led MHS at the plate, going 1 for 2 and two RBIs. Zach Donley, Riley Anderson, Ethan Dorkins and Caleb Neer accounted for the remaining four RBIs. In total, Morgantown secured six runs on 10 hits.

Hampshire was led by Case Parsons who went 1 for 2 and one RBI. The Trojans took advantage of MHS mistakes, scoring three times.
