Forgotten laptop results in 911 call

WESTOVER — A forgotten laptop may have saved a Westover duplex Thursday afternoon.

Rose Marie Walsh owns the structure at 31 Monongahela Ave. Her granddaughter, Misty Rose Walsh, lives in one of the two apartments.

“The guy who lives in Apartment B had been gone about 10 minutes. Misty came to my house, but she forgot her computer so she came back down. When she got here she smelled smoke, so she called 911.”

That was just before 1 p.m.

Westover Fire Chief Kenny Goodwin said the first crews to arrive on scene confirmed smoke in Apartment B and made entry.

“The bulk of the fire was located in the kitchen of the apartment. We used the hose line to knock it down,” Goodwin said. “We checked the rest of the structure and there was water and smoke damage in the rest of the structure. Apartment A had smoke in it but no smoke damage.”

Westover VFD work to quickly put out the fire Thursday.

It appears as if the fire may have started at an outlet near the stove.

Goodwin confirmed that there was nobody home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries to residents or responders.

Crews from Westover, Star City and Granville responded. Mon EMS and Mon Power were also on the scene.
