Mon Sheriff investigating body found in wooded area

MORGANTOWN—An investigation by the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department is underway after a body was found on May 6 in a wooded area east of Fairfield Manor.

Monongalia County sheriff Perry Palmer said this was the fifth search of the area conducted by K-9 cadaver units and volunteers in search of Lorna Phillips.

According to a previous press release from the department, Phillips was last seen on Feb. 11 after being released from Mon Health Medical Center.

“Detectives have been working on it ever since,” Palmer said. “We just follow up on leads people call in and do searches.”

According to a press release issued by the department, investigators said the body found was wearing winter clothing and gloves and appeared to have been there for about 2-3 months. Palmer said the body has been taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsy and identification.

“I want to make sure we thank all the volunteers assisted in the search for their hard work and dedication,” Palmer said.

Mon EMS, Monongalia County Emergency Management and Cheat Lake volunteer fire department also assisted the department, all helping with the retrieval and transport of the body.
