K-State throwing error hands West Virginia a win in the 11th inning

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — Matt McCormick doubled in the 11th inning and later scored on a throwing error to lead West Virginia past Kansas State, 4-3, on Friday at Tointon Family Stadium in Manhattan, Kan.

After the Wildcats (21-16) tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with a ground-out RBI, the Mountaineers answered two innings later.

McCormick, who finished with three hits, doubled to left field with one out and advanced to third on Kevin Brophy’s ground ball.

Pinch-hitter Nathan Blasick then hit a ground ball to K-State short stop Nick Goodwin, whose bad throw to first allowed McCormick to score the winning run.

WVU relief pitcher Jacob Watters picked up the win in relief. He went three scoreless innings and didn’t allow a hit and struck out six.

WVU starting pitcher Jackson Wolf went eight innings and gave up three runs on six hits. He struck out 10 and walked three.

The Mountaineers (15-16) will take on K-State in the second game of the three-game series at 5 p.m. Saturday in what will be WVU’s Randy Mazey’s 800th game as a head coach.

Mikey Kluska added an RBI single in the fifth inning for the Mountaineers, who took a 3-0 lead in that inning.
