PREP ROUNDUP: Clay-Battelle girls fall in sectional championship to Doddridge County

The Clay-Battelle girls’ basketball team was not able to claim the Class A Region I, Section 2 with a 61-45 loss to Doddridge County on Friday night, but its season is not over.

The Cee-Bees (11-7) will advance to the regional co-final, traveling to Cameron at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Doddridge County outscored C-B 31-20 in the fourth quarter, putting the game away. Liv Ammons scored 21 points, while Autumn Stewart added 11.

Baseball

University 9, Parkersburg South 4

The Hawks got off to a roaring start, scoring in each of the first four innings to take a commanding lead they would not relinquish.

Noah Braham led UHS (1-1) with three RBIs, including a run-scoring triple in the third inning. Cam Musgrave had two RBIs, while leadoff hitter also drove in a run.

On the mound, Evan Smith tossed five innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out eight to earn the win. Neal shut the door, pitching two scoreless innings.

The Hawks will host Washington for a doubleheader today with the first game starting at noon.

Softball

Morgantown 12, John Marshall 7; John Marshall 8, Morgantown 3

In Game 1 of a doubleheader, the Mohigans wasted no time getting their offense going in their season-opener.

MHS (1-0) scored four runs in the first inning and four more in the fourth. The scored at least one run every inning after, thanks in large part to Breonna Marietta.

She hit two home runs and drove in four runs to lead the team. Emma Phares and Katie Lemley each drove in two runs, while Mahalie Moser and Grace Haines each had an RBI.

Haines started in the circle and tossed three innings, giving up four earned runs. Mikala Rogers finished the game out, throwing four innings and allowing two earned runs.

In Game 2, the offense wasn’t as explosive as MHS only scored three runs on seven hits, while also committing three errors defensively.

Abigail Harki drove in all three Mohigans’ runs on one swing with a home run in the sixth inning. Micha Wilson pitched three inning and gave up just one unearned run, but the Monarch erupted for six runs in the sixth inning to take the lead.

MHS will host Weir for a doubleheader beginning at noon Sunday.

Girls’ lacrosse

Morgantown 20, Preston 2

A big night from Hannah Calvert and Sammie Gray boosted the Mohigans to their first win of the season.

Calvert scored six goals for MHS (1-0), while Gray added five. In goal, Amelia Desai had seven saves.
The Mohigans will host Wheeling Park at 6 p.m. Monday.

Boys’ tennis

The Mohigans continue their early-season winning ways, sweeping John Marshall 7-0 at Marilla Park.
MHS (3-0) will travel to Bridgeport at 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Middle school boys’ basketball

South 7s 55, Mountaineer 28: The win the Monongalia County championship the Stallions (13-1) were led by Mason Bowers’ 21 points, as well as 17 from Isaiah Thompson. The Mounties were led by Mason Kemper (12) and Jack Byer (11).

Suncrest 8s 42, Mountaineer 28: Brady Savage (15 points) and Marty Johnson (14) led Suncrest (11-0) to a Mon County title, its fourth straight. Coen Henderson scored 10 for the Mounties.

Central Preston 8s 48, Aurora 35: Chayce Adams scored 19 points to lead Central Preston to their fourth-straight Preston County championship. Easton Hayes added 14 points for the Wildcats, who finish their season 16-0 and extend their school record winning streak to 28 games.
