Aileen Shafer

Aileen “Chris” Shafer, 93, of Morgantown, died April 10, 2021. She was born Oct. 25, 1927, to the late Steven and Mary Kuhen in Warren, Ohio.

Chris received her B.A. degree from Ohio University and taught school in Nelsonville, Ohio. She completed graduate work at West Virginia University and was an associate professor in the English department there for many years. Chris published articles about T.S. Eliot, Ann Tyler, Peter Taylor and Mark Twain. Other professional activities included a fellowship at the Folger Shakespeare Library and a fellowship at the Institute for Educational Leadership in Washington, D.C.

Chris was a member of the WVU Campus Club where her favorite activities were the Book Club and the Scrabble group. As a resident of the Heritage Village, she enjoyed bridge, rummikub, reader’s theater and numerous other activities.

Chris is survived by her daughter, Barbara Hengemihle (Frank); son, Eric Shafer; granddaughter, Claire LaGodna; sister, Melania DeLorenzo, sister-in-law, Betsy Shafer; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Chris was preceded in death by her husband, James Shafer; sister, Juanita; and family friend, Joseph Grega.

Hastings Funeral Home has been entrusted with cremation arrangements. A celebration of life will be held in Morgantown at a later date.
