Mon Health bra bank receives donation to help those who undergo mastectomy

MORGANTOWN — Mon Health Equipment and Supplies donated more than $50,000 worth of mastectomy bras, camisoles and mastectomy forms to the Bra Bank at Mon Health Cancer Center. The bra bank supplies these items and more to women after their mastectomy procedures at no cost to them.

“When Mon Health Equipment and Supplies approached me about accepting the extremely generous donation, I was ecstatic that we would finally be able to offer this service at a much higher level. We now have a large assortment or mastectomy bras, camisoles and mastectomy forms in a wide array of sizes for all women,” said Tricia Julian, oncology navigator at Mon Health Cancer Center. “The day after the donation, I had a patient approach me who needed a mastectomy bra and form, so it has already been put to use.”

The bra bank’s purpose is to serve women in the community who have no insurance, insurance that doesn’t cover these items, or insurance with extremely high deductibles. Julian has dedicated much of her time to open these donation closets to ensure women have access to the items they need close to home.

“We will work in collaboration with the donation closet to ensure that ladies who have adequate coverage are referred to our location for a proper fitting and provided with items as their insurance allows,” Jeanette Lancaster, executive director of Mon Health Equipment and Supplies said. “If someone doesn’t have insurance coverage, we will work with Tricia in order to get something donated to the individual so any woman who has had to go through this life-altering procedure can feel whole again, no matter what.”

The Mon Health Cancer Center also operates a wig bank for those who have lost their hair due to cancer treatments and has items such as wigs, scarves and hats. The wig bank and bra bank are operated on donations through the Mon Health Medical Center Foundation.

“I am truly excited about the prospect of being able to offer these services exclusively in the tri-county area for all patients,” Julian said. “I am proud of our program and so enthused for what the future holds for us.”
