WVU earns commitment from Alabama receiver Jarel Williams

By Keenan Cummings

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia continues to compile impressive pieces in the 2022 recruiting class and the most recent addition, Saraland (Ala.) wide receiver Jarel Williams, fits that mold.

Williams, at 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds, collected offers from a long list of college programs that included Notre Dame, Nebraska, Florida State, Iowa, Kansas State, Colorado and others, but decided on WVU. The addition is a big one for the Mountaineers as Williams is an impressive pass catcher.

At his size, Williams moves very well with the speed to run past defensive backs. He possesses strong hands and excellent body control, and is fearless when it comes to going over the middle. He has zero issues high-pointing the football and understands body positioning, but isn’t limited to jump balls.

At the high school level, Williams is used in a variety of ways, including jet sweeps and kickoff returns, showcasing his overall athleticism on the field.

The Rivals.com 3-star prospect first received an offer from WVU in October and continued to build a relationship with the coaching staff since that point. While he has yet to take a formal visit to Morgantown, Williams has been on campus on a self-guided tour to see things for himself.

Despite all of his options, Williams elected to end his recruitment in large part to focus on his final season of high school football, and to put the recruiting process in the rearview mirror.

Last season, Williams accounted for over 1,000 all-purpose yards and 12 touchdowns, and ultimately fell in love not only with the WVU campus but the coaching staff. He is a believer in the plan that head coach Neal Brown is putting into place, and has been in constant contact since receiving an offer in October.

Williams could line up at several different receiver spots in Morgantown and is the first pledge for WVU at the position in the 2022 class. Overall, the Mountaineers now are up to four commitments.

Even with the addition of Williams, expect the Mountaineers to continue to be active in recruiting the wide receiver position, and a number of talented prospects are set to visit if the recruiting dead period is indeed opened back up during the month of June.

Still, Williams is quite the start to those efforts.
