PREP ROUNDUP: Morgantown defeats Preston behind 46 combined points from Ammons, Johnson

KINGWOOD, W.Va. – Kaitlyn Ammons and Berit Johnson matched each other with 23 points to lead the No. 5 Mohigans over Preston, 64-50, at Preston High School.

Ammons and Johnson helped MHS jump out to a 23-17 lead at the end of the first quarter, each netting nine points. Further, the Mohigans’ defense held leading scorers Michelle Thomas and Carsynn Sines to just a combined six points in the stanza. Things slowed down in the second as both teams matched with 11 points to enter the half with MHS still up six points.

Morgantown put up 30 points in the final half while holding PHS to 22 to secure the win.

Johnson and Ammons were the only scorers in double digits for MHS. Sines and Brianna Sphar each had 13 points to pace the Knights, while Thomas added 12.

Middle school basketball

Aurora 43, West Preston 32: Aurora defeated West Preston, 43-32, led by Andrew Burner with 17 points.  West Preston was led by Tristan Smith with 15 points and Aaron White with 11.

Central Preston 51, East Fairmont 27: Chayce Adams scored 17 points to lead the Wildcats attack. Easton Hayes added 16 and Jared Haskiell chipped in with 12 points for undefeated CPMS.

Suncrest 7s 65, Westwood 43: Suncrest (5-5) was led by Kelton Blunt with 12 and Chase Savage added 10 in its win over Westwood. Westwood’s Glenn Brown led all scores with 22, while teammate Kaliel Lewis added 15.

South 7s 33, Mountaineer 31: Mason Bowers led South with 13 points in the win. Mason Kemper hit 9 in the loss .

South 8s 59, Mountaineer 55: Seth Wisman (14) and Parker Watkins (11) combined for 25 points in the win over Mountaineer Tuesday night. Ty Jordan-Egnot tallied 14 points and Max Frey had 11 to pace Mountaineer in the loss.
