PREP ROUNDUP: Clay-Battelle girls ‘ basketball team holds off Hundred 44-37

The Clay-Battelle girls’ basketball team held off a late charge by Hundred to walk out with a 44-37 win Wednesday night.

The Cee-Bees led 29-19 at the end of the third quarter, but the Hornets scored 18 in the final quarter to C-B’s 15 to pull within single digits, but the Cee-Bees were able to hang on.

“C-B held on against a scrappy Hundred squad, going 11 of 7 from the foul line in the fourth quarter as the Hornets rallied late in the game,” C-B head coach David Joyce said.

Liv Ammons scored 21 points to lead all scorers, while Brianna Rinehart scored 14 for Hundred.
C-B (9-5) will host Paden City at 7 p.m. Friday.

Fairmont Senior 73, University 60

Playing the No. 1 team in Class AAA, the Hawks put up their best effort against the Polar Bears, taking the lead into the fourth quarter but could hang on. FSHS outscored UHS 26-10 in the final eight minutes.

“We had a 3-point lead at the end of the third and kind of ran out of gas in the fourth and they hit some big shots in the fourth quarter,” assistant coach Dave Boggs said.

The Hawks (7-7) had three score in double figures — Ella Simpson (16), Lauren Dean (14) and Ashlen Weaver (12).

The Hawks will host Lewis County at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Preston 69, Liberty 38

The Knights got off to a roaring start, outscoring Liberty 19-4 in the first quarter and sailing to a blowout win.

Carsynn Sines led PHS with 12 points, while Hannah Cramer added 10. Everyone on the team scored at least one point and Michelle Thomas finished with 11 rebounds.

The Knights will host Lincoln at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Boys’ basketball

Notre Dame 72, Trinity 50

After keeping it close early, the Warriors could not get over the hump, falling on the road.

“We came out and did not execute well on the offensive side of the ball,” head coach Rick Hill said. “We wanted to be smart and look for good scoring opportunities and we got ourselves rushed by there defensive style. We also got into some foul trouble early into the game, which hurt us on both ends of the court. I give credit to Jarrod and his team for executing there gameplan.”

Gavin Jackson scored 14 points to lead Trinity (4-3), while Jaidyn West scored a game high 25 points for Notre Dame.

The Warriors will play at Moorefield on Saturday

Middle school girls’ basketball

Suncrest 7s 35, Westwood 14: Suncrest was led by Leyton Balderson with 14 points and Madi Stone with 11. Top scorer for Westwood was Emme Stevens with 5 points.

Mountaineer 7s 29, South 25: Riley Braham led the Mounties with 9 points.

Mountaineer 8s 39, South 12: Riley Tennant led the Mounties with 8 points.

Middle school boys’ basketball

Central Preston 8s 63 Bruceton 10: Jared Haskiell led Central Preston with 20 points. Chayce Adams scored 14 points and Easton Hayes added 10 for the Wildcats (11-0).
