Kysre Gondrezick, Esmery Martinez earn all-Big 12 first-team honors

MORGANTOWN– Kysre Gondrezick was a first-team unanimous selection to the all-Big 12 team Wednesday, and she was joined by teammate Esmery Martinez.

It’s the first time since 2014 the Mountaineers had two players selected to the first team, when Asya Bussie and Bria Holmes earned that distinction.

The Big 12 coaches vote for the awards and are not permitted to vote for their own players.

Gondrezick averaged 20 points per game, which was fifth in the Big 12, while Martinez averaged 11.8 rebounds per game, which was third in the conference.

The 17th-ranked Mountaineers (19-5, 13-5 Big 12) will play the winner of Thursday’s Kansas State-Texas Tech game at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the Big 12 Tournament quarterfinals.

Baylor forward NaLyssa Smith was named the Big 12 Player of the Year, while Oklahoma State’s Jim Littell was the Coach of the Year.

Oklahoma State’s Natasha Mack was the Defensive Player of the Year, Baylor’s DiJonai Carrington was the Newcomer of the Year and the Sixth Man Award winner and Iowa State’s Lexi Donarski was the Freshman of the Year.

The Mountaineers also placed Kari Niblack and KK Deans on the honorable mention list.

Joining Smith, Mack, Gondrezick and Martinez on the first team were TCU’s Lauren Heard, Iowa State’s Ashley Joens, Kansas State’s Akoya Lee, Oklahoma’s Madi Williams, Texas’ Charli Collier and Texas Tech’s Vivian Gray.
