Vehicle crash takes out bus stop shelter

The shelter over the bus stop in front of Morgantown Unity Manor on Willey Street was destroyed in a single-vehicle crash Sunday morning.

Around 3:50 a.m., a traffic crash involving one vehicle that failed to make the turn on Willey Street and struck the Mountain Line bus shelter was reported to the Morgantown Police Department, Morgantown Communications Director Andrew Stacy said Tuesday.

MPD officers responded and are investigating, he said. The driver of the black Volkswagen Jetta that crashed was identified as James E. Pace Jr., Stacy said. Two parked and unoccupied vehicles were damaged by debris from the crash.

Mountain Line General Manager David Bruffy said the bus shelter doesn’t actually belong to the transit system.

MSSmedia, a company out of Florida, owns the shelter, Bruffy said. The company purchases shelters and sells advertising on them.

Bruffy said he’s been in contact with MSSmedia and offered the use of one of Mountain Line’s shelters temporarily.

The location of damaged bus stop is used by a number of students and has service to the airport via Richwood Avenue to Hartman Run Road and the Downtown PM Mall line, which travels between Towers and Morgantown Mall with stops in Westover and downtown Morgantown.

The shelter was cleaned up Monday and only the bench remains.

The Dominion Post was unable to reach MSSmedia in time for this report.
