Village at Heritage Point celebrates Heart Month

Newsroom@DominionPost.com

There are always a lot of different activities at The Village at Heritage Point and February is no exception. The Life Enrichment team gave each assisted living resident a Valentine box where they can store little gifts and Valentine’s Day cards.

The students at Brookhaven Elementary School, partner in education for The Village at Heritage Point,  created handmade Valentine’s Day cards for the residents.

“We miss doing activities with the Brookhaven Elementary School children and hosting them at The Village for events,” said Wilma Sternthal, executive director of The Village at Heritage Point. “The pandemic has prevented us from celebrating Halloween with our customary concert and costume parade with candy for the kids, Empty Bowls painting activity and other yearly performances. We are excited to share the love with their handmade Valentines this year. I know our residents will cherish them.”

Independent living residents were paired for a Secret Valentine Pal program, where each participant leaves a small gift for their secret valentine pal on the shelf outside of their apartment home.

Life Enrichment Manager Sherry Newcome said, “It has been fun to watch how excited the residents get when they find their new treasures.”

Secret Valentine Pals were revealed Feb. 15.

Village residents Scottie and Ed Sneckenberger  enjoyed the Secret Pal activity, especially during the pandemic.

“Our Secret Valentine Pal is very creative and has led us on an adventurous trail that is based upon expanding alphabetical and numerical surprise gifts each day,” Ed said.

Dr. Samantha Crites, cardiologist with the Mon Health Heart and Vascular Center, gave a presentation about Women’s Heart Health to the residents of The Village at Heritage Point  Feb. 18. Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in both women and men. According to statistics from the American Heart Association, one woman dies from heart disease in the U.S. every minute.

On Tuesday, Mon Health Medical Center infectious diseases specialist, Dr. Archana Vasudevan, will talk to the residents about COVID-19. She will discuss the spread, symptoms, testing, treatment, vaccinations and variants and will be available to answer questions.

The Village at Heritage Point, a not-for-profit life plan community, offers  independent living apartments (in The Village) and assisted living apartments (in The Suites) on a single campus.
