No one files to run for Reedsville mayor, recorder

REEDSVILLE –  The town of Reedsville had no candidate filings for Mayor or Recorder.  Recorder Sandy Kisner said the charter for the town and/or state will be followed in regards to filling those positions 30 to 100 days after the election.

Write-ins have until April 20 to notify the town of their desire to be added to the ballot.

Kisner chose to run for council in the upcoming election instead of recorder. Mayor Jason Titus and Councilwoman Britney Titus did not choose to run for reelection.

There are eight candidates set to run in the 2021 election. They are:

  • Steve Adams
  • Greg Burke
  • Sandy Kisner
  • Trellis Smith
  • Scott Spiker
  • Scott Williams
  • Jeff Stone
  • Renee Stone

A discussion about reasons residents choose not to run and the issues that are keeping them from running for office took place at this week’s council meeting.

Two of the reasons mentioned was length of terms and salary for the positions. Term length recently went from two years to four. A change to the salary has to be made six months before the deadline for candidates to file to run for office.

In other business:

Council ordered two packs of tabletop ADA voting booths with carrying cases. Town Clerk Danielle Spiker found out during municipal election training the town needed two new booths due to the recent fraud allegations during the presidential elections.  The town’s current voting booths are not up to the required standards.

Pre-bid paperwork for the basketball court will be prepared and posted in a local newspaper for possible contractors.  If no response, personal contact will be made with locally known contractors to see if they are interested.

Sidewalks need cleaned by residents in front of their own properties and any areas not in front of personal property should be cleaned by town workers.  Britney Titus made a motion to purchase a 24-inch-by-30-inch self-propelled snow blower at a cost of $1,600 or less; motion seconded by Scott Williams. The motion carried.

The area of West Street that joins the rail-trail needs to be plowed when it snows now due to someone purchasing the house at the end of that street. The owner of the house will need to be made aware of the Town Ordinance of no parking on the street and they should only use their driveway.

The next meeting of the Reedsville Town Council will be 6:30 p.m. Feb. 22.
