Preston Solid Waste board expands recycling

KINGWOOD – Members of the Preston County Solid Waste board approved a recycle building for Hopemont.  Don Smith, who represents the county commission on the board said the building cost $1,858.50.  The board approved the purchase of the building at its November meeting.

Board members also approved the purchase of a 32 gallon three-stream waste and recycling station from Recycle Away Systems and Solutions.

Smith said Recycle Away submitted the lowest of the four bids he received.  He said the company bid $4,140.  Shipping for the bins is $891.30. He one of the bins will be blue, one black, and one beige.

New bins will also be placed at Shaffer Printing. Litter Officer Jay Sowers said the bins are needed to keep paper from spilling out when it is dumped.

“This way we will be able to machine dump the paper,” he said. “And it won’t be flying everywhere.  We get a lot of paper from Shaffers.”

He said the 4 bins will cost $200.

At their January meeting Smith asked board members to come up with a recycling slogan.

He said Texas’ slogan is “Don’t Mess With Texas.” Board secretary Peggy Pase suggested, “Why Trash Wild and Wonderful?”

At their Wednesday meeting a list of 30 slogans were presented for consideration.  There was an additional slogan on a separate sheet of paper with no number beside it. It simply read “Why are you littering?” There were 4 nswers that could be checked off: I’m stupid; I don’t care about my county; Mommy still cleans up after me; and all of the above.

No decision was made on a slogan.

In other business, Sowers said he has been receiving complaints from people who say they cannot reach him by phone. Sowers can be reached at 304-698-5594. Leave a message if he doesn’t answer.
