West Virginia announces rifle schedule

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — WVU athletic director Shane Lyons announced the 2020-21 rifle schedule Monday.

The Mountaineers regular season will consist of three home matches and three away matches.

WVU will shoot against Ohio State, Ole Miss, Navy, and Akron at home. All home matches will be held at the WVU Rifle Range or at the Bill McKenzie Rifle Range inside the WVU Shell Building.

In addition, the Mountaineers open their season at Akron. They will also compete in Lexington and Columbus this season.

“We are really excited about getting back to competition in January,” Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond said. “It’s been a different and difficult fall semester for many reasons, and the schedule has had to be tweaked, but ultimately we are excited to compete come January.

“I think it will be a very competitive and challenging schedule with matches against Kentucky and Ole Miss who are two of the highest-ranking teams right now. Ultimately we will be looking at getting three good results at three different venues to put us in a good position going into the NCAA Qualifiers in Feb.”

The Mountaineers open their season at Akron on Jan. 16.

WVU then opens its home season against Ohio State on Jan. 23. Following the home opener, the Mountaineers will face Ole Miss, Navy and Akron on Jan. 30. Along with Ole Miss again on Jan. 31 at home.

Following a week off from competition, the Mountaineers will travel to Kentucky on Feb. 13.

West Virginia closes its regular season at the 2020 NCAA Qualifier in Columbus, Ohio on Feb. 20.

WVU will return to action for the GARC Championships. The location and date will be announced at a later time. The Mountaineers will shoot for their 15 GARC Championship title.

They also look to reclaim the NCAA Championship and earn their sixth title in nine seasons at the 2021 NCAA National Championships, March 12-13, in Columbus, Ohio. WVU did not compete last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ten student-athletes return for the Mountaineers this season, including four new faces. The Mountaineers concluded the 2019-20 season at 9-1 (7-1 GARC).
