Police arrest suspect in University Avenue stabbing

MORGANTOWN — A New York City man is suspected of stabbing another man Monday morning at Bartlett House.
Alonzo M. Young Jr., 32, is charged with malicious wounding.

The victim was taken to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital with stab wounds to his shoulder and back, according to the Morgantown Police Department. He is expected to survive, according to a criminal complaint.

Morgantown Communications Director Andrew Stacy said the victim frequently stays at the Bartlett House.

Officers were sent to Bartlett House, on University Avenue, downtown Morgantown, at about 7:20 a.m. Monday and made contact with Young about five minutes later, at the intersection of Beechurst and University avenues.

Patrolman First Class D. Moore spotted Young walking quickly and wrote that Young started walking faster after seeing the police cruiser. Moore got out of the car and ordered Young to stop.

Young turned around and Moore saw he was covered in a “large amount of blood all over his hands, jacket, pants and shoes,” the complaint said. Moore told Young to take his hands out of his pockets to which he replied, “just shoot me.” After negotiating with Young, Moore was able to put hand cuffs on him.

According to the complaint, Young then said the person he allegedly stabbed attacked him, “stating ‘I was [using the bathroom] and he was rushing me and bust in’ and that the victim ‘reached into his pocket and I didn’t know was he getting so I reached into my pocket and (retrieved his knife).’ ”

A knife was found in Young’s left pocket and Young is left-handed, the complaint said. Young had no visible injuries, and the blood on his clothes was not his.

He was arraigned by Magistrate Tim Pocius and is being held in North Central Regional in lieu of $50,000 bond.
