Lawrence Ralph Cale, 81, of Arthurdale, died peacefully at 5:44 a.m. on Wednesday Dec. 16, 2020, at Stonerise Healthcare, Kingwood (formerly Pine Ridge).

Born Feb. 8, 1939, he was the son of the late Ralph Waldo and Viva Alma (Burns) Cale.

Known by family and friends as “Sonny” or “Apper,” he served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1956 until he was honorably discharged in 1962 and was a member of the Valley High School Class of 1957. He owned and operated Sonny Cale Trucking LLC until his retirement in 2000. He was an avid football fan, animal lover and antique automobile enthusiast and was a member of the Antique Automobile Club of America — West Virginia Region for many years. He loved to travel, having been in 49 of the 50 states, excluding Oklahoma.

Sonny is survived by his wife, Maitlan T. (Fink) Cale; daughter, Sonya L. Fultz and husband Joseph, of Buckhannon (Kesling Mill Community); grandson, Luke Massey, of Arthurdale; sister, Martha Jane Wyman, of Tunnelton; brother-in-law, David Boggs, of Masontown; several nieces and nephews and many friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Rosalea (Cale) Boggs and Beulah Cale; his best friend, Ronald A. “Ronnie” Zinn; and his former son-in-law, Gary Allen Massey.

In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, private graveside services will be held at a later date in the Mount Zion Cemetery in Masontown, W.Va.

The family requests that donations in Sonny’s memory be made to the Preston County Animal Shelter at 278 Poor Farm Road Kingwood, WV 26537 or the Preston County Humane Society at P.O. Box 395 Kingwood, WV 26537.

Arrangements have been entrusted into the care of the Morgan Funeral Home in Reedsville and we are honored to serve the Cale family.
