Black Bear Burritos is permanently closing its location at 132 Pleasant Street in downtown Morgantown after 17 years of service.

The closure was announced via the restaurant’s Facebook page on Friday, Dec. 11.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the permanent closure of our Pleasant Street location,” the post read. “While this marks the end of 17 wonderful years downtown, it by no means signals the end of Black Bear.”

The post urged patrons of the business to continue to show their support by visiting the Black Bear Burritos location at 3119 University Avenue in Morgantown.

“We look forward to continuing to serve our community for many years to come,” the post concluded.

The post received over 300 comments, the majority of which consisted of customers and supporters of Black Bear Burritos expressing their sadness toward the closure and reminiscing on good times spent at the restaurant.

Morgantown residents Catherine Whitworth, Daria Jones and Jessica Layne were just a few of the hundreds of individuals who vented their devastation on Friday.

“That place has been the cornerstone of downtown for many years — and always a point of pride where you took visitors and potential faculty recruits,” Whitworth said.

“The downtown Black Bear was a more intimate music venue and eatery. It always sponsored local artists and was colorful and joyous. I like ‘downtowns’ and ours just keeps diminishing. This is sad news indeed,” said Jones.

“A piece of our community has died. This is a major loss for many,” added Layne.

The owners of Black Bear Burritos could not be reached for comment in time for this report.
