Community support pours in for family

GoFundMe provides some needed help after Fairview fire

There has been a lot of community support for the family of Summer Eddy, a 2-year-old who died in a house fire  Dec. 3 on Days Run Road, Fairview.

That’s according to Cheryl Holcomb, grandmother to Summer and mother of  the little girl’s mom, Brandy Eddy.

The Eddy family — Jonathan, Brandy, Spencer and Summer — lost everything when fire broke out in their home a week ago.

Since then, Jonathan, Brandy and Spencer have been living with Holcomb in her Nicholas County home.

And people are finding them, trying to help anyway they can.

A woman from Colorado who heard about what happened while playing video games with a family member   replaced 4-year-old Spencer’s stuffed monkey — paying $25 for it on eBay, Holcomb said.

Holcomb said the family wants to pay the kindness forward and donated   all of Summer’s toys that were at her house and her sister’s house to children on an Angel Tree. Spencer has received 50-75 outfits and six coats, two of which have been passed on to other families that needed them.

“I would like to thank everyone that has helped so much,” Holcomb said. “They don’t know how much we appreciate it. If we could do anything, we’d be more than happy to help anybody.”

Spencer and Brandy were in the kitchen when Jonathan  started yelling for them to get out of the house. Holcomb said she thinks Summer was scared by the yelling and she hid behind a door where she couldn’t be found.

Jonathan inhaled soot, smoke and possibly flames while looking for Summer and was admitted to West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was on a ventilator and  could be sent home today, but it will be with oxygen, Holcomb said. He also suffered  cuts on his arm and head.

“We’ve spent a lot of time crying,” Holcomb said. “She was our angel.”

The family is currently staying   with Holcomb in her small two-bedroom home and the priority is  finding them a place to live. Holcomb said they might start building a small place on a piece of land with a foundation she owns and then expand it as they can.

Anyone interested in helping the family can donate through GoFundMe by searching for “Family lost everything in house fire” by Suzi Metcalf, Brandy’s sister.

Donations can also be mailed to Holcomb at P.O. Box 184, Birch River, WV 26610. Anyone interested in helping in other ways can contact the family’s pastor, Carl Griffin, of Erbacon Community Church, at 304-226-3510.
