University only local team to secure playoff berth, Morgantown just outside cutoff at No. 17

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — University High is the only area team to secure a playoff berth, landing in the No. 14 spot after its win over Oak Hill on Friday.

The Hawks (3-3) will face off against No. 3 Musselman (6-1) in the first round.

Morgantown (3-3) just missed the cutoff after a loss to No. 5 Bridgeport (6-1) on Friday, coming in the No. 17 spot. The Mohigans’ rating was just behind No. 16 John Marshall (5-4), a difference of 0.06. Preston High (3-7) ended its season as the 23rd-ranked team in Class AAA.

In Class A, Trinity Christian (3-3) fell to No. 28,  while Clay-Battelle (3-2) was pushed out of the top-16 to the No. 20 spot following its loss to Wirt County.

The WVSSAC ruled earlier this week that teams in orange and red counties would be unable to participate in the playoffs, but a reversal on Saturday gives affected teams one week for their respective counties’ COVID-19 metrics to drop into safer territory or they have to forfeit their game. Opponents of teams forced to forfeit will automatically move on to the next round.
