HOW THEY SCORED: West Virginia 37, Kansas State 10

FIRST QUARTER

KANSAS STATE FIELD GOAL: Blake Lynch 21-yard kick (8:33), Kansas State leads, 3-0.

West Virginia’s defense made an early impact.

First, WVU’s Nicktroy Fortune intercepted Will Howard on the Wildcats’ first possession and then the Mountaineers came up with a goal-line stand to force the field goal.

WEST VIRGINIA FIELD GOAL: Evan Staley 19-yard kick (3:06), game is tied, 3-3.

Kansas State came up with a goal-line stand of its own when they shut down WVU running back Leddie Brown on third down on a play that Brown had no chance.

WVU drove 72 yards on the scoring drive in 16 plays. Brown had a 15-yard run up the middle to highlight the drive.

WVU quarterback Jarret Doege missed a touchdown opportunity when he overthrew an open Sam James on what could have been a 6-yard TD pass.

SECOND QUARTER

WVU TOUCHDOWN: Ali Jennings 5-yard pass from Doege (12:27), West Virginia leads, 10-3.

Jennings caught his first touchdown pass of the season by working his way in the back of the end zone and WVU’s offensive line gave Doege a clean pocket on the play.

The big play of the drive came on a 58-yard pass to Bryce Ford-Wheaton, who had a pitch-and-catch with Doege on a slant play and Ford-Wheaton nearly scored but couldn’t stay in bounds and went out at the Kansas State 7.

WVU TOUCHDOWN: Brown 9-yard run (8:31), West Virginia leads, 17-3.

After getting clogged up in the middle, Brown bounced this run to the right and dove over a Kansas State defender at the 2-yard line for the score.

The play was reviewed to determine if Brown went out of bounds during his leap and the play was upheld.

It was Brown’s 10th touchdown of the season.

WVU TOUCHDOWN: Winston Wright 15-yard pass from Doege (3:38), West Virginia leads, 24-3.

West Virginia hit all on cylinders on this drive.

Wright was on a swing route on the play, going in motion to the left in the backfield and then going back out to the right flats.

Doege looked down field first, but then came back to Wright, who danced in down the right sideline.

WVU running back Alec Sinkfield also had a 36-yard run earlier in the drive.

KANSAS STATE TOUCHDOWN: Malik Knowles 35-yard pass from Howard (1:05), West Virginia leads, 24-10.

Knowles beat WVU defensive back Dreshun Miller on a deep post pattern after it appeared Miller expected Knowles to break off his pattern.

There was no help over the top from a safety and so Knowles found himself wide open for the score.

THIRD QUARTER

WVU FIELD GOAL: Casey Legg 25-yard kick (9:16), West Virginia leads, 27-10.

Legg made his first field goal of the season after subbing in for Staley, who was injured making a tackle during a Kansas State kickoff return in the first half.

WVU drove 67 yards in 14 plays with T.J. Simmons picking up 21 yards on a jet-sweep pass and then WVU used tight end Mike O’Laughlin for a 15-yard gain after he found a hole in the zone.

WVU TOUCHDOWN: Dylan Tonkery 18-yard interception return (7:51), West Virginia leads, 34-10.

WVU’s defense came up with its third interception of the game, this one from the WVU linebacker who snuffed out a screen pass in the flats and went into the end zone.

FOURTH QUARTER

WVU FIELD GOAL: Legg 45-yard kick (10:35), West Virginia leads, 37-10.

The Mountaineers continued to roll with a 9-play, 44-yard drive that saw Ford-Wheaton haul in a 38-yard pass to go over 100 yards receiving, as well as Brown going over 100 yards rushing in the game.
