GAME DAY BLOG: WVU beats No. 16 Kansas State 37-10

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — 9:58 a.m.: For the first time in days, the sun is out on a chilly Halloween morning as WVU will face No. 16 Kansas State at noon on Milan Puskar Stadium. The Mountaineers will wear gold helmets and jerseys, finished off with blue pants. ESPN’s College GameDay is on the big screens as Kansas State personnel begin the trickle onto the field. WVU is allowing 15,000 fans again, so we’ll see if we get close to that number.

10:30 a.m.: The countdown has started. The clock at the stadium is now counting down from 90 minutes. Special teams players are on the field for both teams getting some work in as a few fans have begun moving to their seats.

11:23 a.m.: The Mountaineers just got JUICED, and it was said no lineup changes will be made. Zach Frazier will start at left guard over James Gmiter and VanDarius Cowan is still out at bandit linebacker, so Jared Bartlett will get the start.

11:58 a.m.: WVU wins the toss and defers to the second half. K-State will receiver in about one minute.

12:03 p.m.: After having a couple called back because of penalties, Nicktroy Fortune gets an interception for the Mountaineers. True freshman quarterback Will Howard looked bad on that first drive.

12:06 p.m.: Jarret Doege takes a bad third down sack and Evan Staley subsequently misses a 51-yard field goal. Missed opportunity for WVU.

12:17 p.m.: The Mountaineers make a stand at the goal line to hold K-State to a field goal. The Wildcats take a 3-0 lead.

12:36 p.m.: A 16-play drive ends with three points for the Mountaineers. Jarret Doege is off on almost all of his throws early, but Leddie Brown is continuing to be the star of the offense.

12:43 p.m.: Sean Mahone with his first pick of the season of a strong interception of Will Howard. WVU takes over at its own 12.

12:45 p.m.: WVU’s offense does absolutely nothing but lose nine yards on its next possession and punts back to the Wildcats. Not a good day for Jarret Doege what-so-ever.

12:52 p.m.: K-State misses a 51-yard field goal of its own to keep the score tied at 3-3.

12:56 p.m.: Finally, WVU does something offensively with the Wildcats in a Cover 0 defensive scheme. A long slant to Bryce Ford-Wheaton sets up a 3rd down touchdown pass from Doege to Ali Jennings, his first of the year.

1:11 p.m.: WVU’s defense continues to ball out and the offense is starting to hum. Leddie Brown caps a 6-play, 51-yard drive with a 9-yard touchdown run. The Mountaineers take a 17-3 lead.

1:29 p.m.: The Mountaineers offense is a well-oiled machine right now, three straight drives ending in touchdowns and Jarret Doege looks so much more comfortable. The last score was a 15-yard touchdown from Doege to Winston Wright.

1:41 p.m.: WVU had a chance to take all momentum into the locker room, but Kansas State tacks on a touchdown with just over a minute left in the half. Malik Knowles hauls in a 35-yard pass from Howard.

2:20 p.m.: A promising drive to start the second half for the Mountaineers, but it ends in just three points. Still, the Mountaineers hold a three-possession lead over the Wildcats 27-10.

2:27 p.m.: A screen pass goes awry for Kansas State as it’s tipped in the air and into the arms of Dylan Tonkery for a pick-6. Mountaineers take a 34-10 lead.

3:07 p.m.: Casey Legg knocks in a 45-yard field goal to put the Mountaineers up 37-10.
