End Goal in Sight

No firm opening date for Preston County Youth Center, but aiming for end of year

REEDSVILLE — A firm opening date has not yet been set for the  Preston County Youth Center (PCYC), but the target date is by the end of the year.

“We hope to have kids in by the end of December,” Tony Deal, president of Insurance Centers Inc., said.

Deal said the shell of the building is almost complete and heat and air conditioning will go in soon.

PCYC is located on W.Va. 7, behind Three Guys Fitness, across from Luigi’s Sports Center.

Situated on seven acres of land, Deal said, the center will offer    amenities  including  indoor batting cages, indoor soccer, basketball, a wrestling area and rope course.

An outdoor soccer field and a softball/baseball field  are also planned.

Earlier, Roxanne Blosser, executive director of PCYC, said sports are not the only option the youth center will offer.

“It’s going to be a full multi-use facility,” she said. “We want to offer some life skills like cooking, sewing and managing finances. We talked to some people at the Preston County Vietnam Veterans of America about doing a basic automobile care class.”

She said they also discussed having a small area for kids who are interested in motorcycle and 4-wheeler repair.

According to a news release, PCYC will also have a full kitchen and gym for large events, conference rooms and event rooms for rent.

“I reached out after hearing the governor speak about the Game Changer Initiative,” Blosser said. “Hopefully, we can get involved with that.”

The Game Changer Initiative is a program aimed at tackling opioid and substance abuse, along with other issues that impact West Virginia’s youth. Its goal is to empower children to make healthy choices.

As a multifunctional sports complex, the PCYC can be used for a wide variety of events and activities that will benefit the community.

Events and community activities that can be held at the facility include football, basketball,  volleyball, soccer, baseball, cheer, wrestling, gymnastics, softball, track/CC,  indoor archery, 3v3 basketball,  4v4 football and 3v3 soccer.

There can also be bingo, parties, business meetings, sports banquets, college day, weddings, wedding receptions, fairs and festivals, after school care, family movie nights, life skills courses, community garden,  trunk-or-treats, Easter egg hunt and Santa meet-and-greets.

Pricing will be determined based on the type of event, what assets are needed and how many staff/volunteers are needed to  help the event run.
