Former Morgantown star Athena Young named SEC Freshman of the Week

Morgantown High's Athena Young crosses the finish line at the 2019 West Virginia State Cross-Country Meet in Ona, W.Va. Young finished as the runner-up with a time of 17:34.52. Young signed with University of Kentucky to run cross-country and distance in track and field.

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Kentucky women's cross-country team collected an award as former Morgantown High star Athena Young was tabbed the SEC Women's Freshman Runner of the Week.
Making her initial collegiate appearance, Young was the first freshman across the finish line -- placing sixth overall -- at the Commodore Classic. Young was steady throughout the race, navigating the 6,000 meters in 21:34.0. She placed second among the UK contingent, behind senior Jenna Gearing, as the Wildcats notched their first team win since the 2018 Bluegrass Invitational.
