Walk-ins received free COVID-19 testing Friday

The WVU Rec Center transformed into a COVID-19 testing site Friday, as the Monongalia County Health Department encouraged residents to show up, whether or not they showed symptoms for the virus.

MaryWade Burnside, spokesperson for the health department, said 490 people were tested.

The free testing was walk-in only — a change from past testing in the area. The idea was to get a better picture of those in the county with the disease. Dr. Lee B. Smith, MCHD executive director and county health officer, pointed out in a statement that up to 40% of people who have COVID-19 do not display symptoms.

This testing is being done in conjunction with the West Virginia National Guard and West Virginia University.

For the time being, free testing will take place more frequently until Monongalia County’s numbers improve. The date of the next test was not set in time for this report.
