Irene Swecker

Irene C. Swecker, of Huttonsville (Randolph County), 98, died on Sept. 14, 2020 in North Carolina. She was born Feb. 12, 1922, in Manheim, Preston County, the daughter of the late George William Deets Jr. and the late Edith Mae Sanders Deets and step-daughter of the late Reland Ann Loughry Deets.

She graduated from Rowlesburg High School in 1939, Potomac State College in 1941 and West Virginia University in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science degree.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Donald B. Swecker, of Huttonsville.

She is survived by her eight children, Mark Swecker and wife Bonnie, of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., Edith Votta and husband Richard, of Greensboro, N.C.; Ben Swecker, of Nokesville, Va.; Emily Thomasson and husband Ed, of Atlanta; Lisa Poole and husband Jeff, of Crestwood, Ky.; Kim Swecker and late wife Brenda, of Cincinnati; Jeff Swecker and wife Mary, of Albright; Andrew Swecker and wife Tammy, of Mill Creek (Randolph County); 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Irene lived a long, rich life and was dearly loved by all.

Irene and her family lived in Glenmore; Woodbridge, Va.; and Louisville, Ky., before she and Don retired to the family farm in Huttonsville in 1980. She was an avid fan of West Virginia University sports and enjoyed reading and knitting. She was a member of the Becky’s Creek Women’s Society and the Mill Creek-Huttonsville Homemakers. She was a long-time volunteer and supporter of Tyrand Cooperative Ministries where she received several Volunteer of the Year Awards. An Episcopalian and associate member of Valley Chapel United Methodist Church, she taught Sunday school for many years. Irene was also a member of the Youghiogheny Glades Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

Her children will hold a private graveside service at the Brick Church Cemetery in Huttonsville. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tyrand Cooperative Ministries, P.O. Box 365, Mill Creek, WV 26280 or Valley Chapel United Methodist Church, 761 Beckys Creek Road Huttonsville, WV 26273 in memory of Irene. The Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins is in charge of arrangements for Irene C. Swecker.
