HOW THEY SCORED: West Virginia 56, Eastern Kentucky 10

FIRST QUARTER

WVU TOUCHDOWN: Leddie Brown 10-yard run (13:28), West Virginia leads, 7-0.

After struggling in the run game a season ago, the Mountaineers opened the game with a 38-yard run by Brown, who then capped off the four-play drive with a scoring run up the middle of Eastern Kentucky’s defense.

WVU quarterback Jarret Doege completed both of his passes on the drive for 34 yards.

WVU TOUCHDOWN: Brown 15-yard pass from Doege (6:23), West Virginia leads, 14-0.

Brown showed his versatility by scoring on a reception after scoring on the ground.

The credit on the drive goes to Doege, though, who was 7 of 8, including a 24-yard pass to Winston Wright Jr. on third-and-6.

Doege’s only incompletion of the drive was a drop by Bryce Ford-Wheaton on a deep post pattern.

Through the first two possessions, Brown accounted for 73 total yards.

SECOND QUARTER

WVU TOUCHDOWN: Sam James 32-yard pass from Doege, (12:59), West Virginia leads, 21-0.

James got behind EKU defensive back Joseph Sayles and hauled in a perfectly-placed pass in a one-on-one situation.

At this point, Doege was 11 of 14 for 144 yards and two touchdowns.

EKU TOUCHDOWN: Keyion Dixon 28-yard pass from Peyton McKinney (10:49), West Virginia leads, 21-7.

The Colonels scored their first touchdown of the season, as McKinney stepped up in the pocket and found an open McKinney, who got behind the WVU secondary.

McKinney was 2 for 2 on the drive for 51 yards.

The drive lasted five plays and 75 yards.

WVU TOUCHDOWN: Alec Sinkfield 8-yard run (8:22), West Virginia leads 28-7.

The Mountaineers answered right back with a 6-play, 75-yard drive capped off by Sinkfield’s run through the middle on a run-pass option.

The junior running back had three carries on the drive for 43 yards.

WVU TOUCHDOWN: Brown 8-yard run (2:33), West Virginia leads 35-7.

Brown scored his third touchdown of the day on a drive that was set up by an interception from WVU defensive back Alonzo Addae.

Brown also highlighted the drive with a 36-yard run to move him past 100 yards rushing in the first half.

WVU TOUCHDOWN: Ford-Wheaton 8-yard pass from Doege (0:31), West Virginia 42-7.

Playing hurry-up, the Mountaineers needed just 71 seconds to drive 42 yards on seven plays.

Ford-Wheaton had dropped a touchdown on the previous play, but Doege went right back to him on a crossing pattern for the score.

It was Doege’s third touchdown pass of the first half.

THIRD QUARTER

EKU FIELD GOAL: Alexander Woznik 32-yard kick (12:16), West Virginia leads, 42-10.

McKinney hit receiver Jacquez Jones for a 47-yard pass, which covered all but 13 yards on this seven-play drive to open the second half.

WVU TOUCHDOWN: Sinkfield 17 run (8:07), West Virginia leads, 49-10.

Sinkfield scores his second touchdown of the day, as well as joining Brown for gaining more than 100 yards on the ground.

WVU began the half with backup quarterback Austin Kendall in the game.
