West Virginia coaching staff can now contact 2022 targets

By Keenan Cummings

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — September is here and that means football, fall and something else on the recruiting front.

West Virginia is still in the midst of piecing together the remainder of the 2021 recruiting class with 14 current commitments, but now work can now formally begin on the 2022 cycle.

Scholarship offers and interest were already out for the class, but programs can now contact 2022 recruits after the turn of the calendar into September. That means coaches can now reach out to prospects to initiate conversations without them needing to come to campus to do so.

The Mountaineers are not different than the rest of the college programs, as the beginning of the period leads to new connections and new scholarship offers being distributed.

Kannapolis (N.C.) Brown linebacker Torren Wright is one of those who hadn’t heard from the coaches until Sept. 1, but is already planning to take a visit to campus. Wright, at 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, already had offers from multiple Power 5 programs, but has been impressed by the message from the WVU coaches after he was able to speak to them on the phone.

“They gave a good introductory that makes me even more excited to learn more about them,” he said.

The 4-star prospect is coming off a season where he recorded 84 tackles, but is excited to see where the recruiting process will take him next including looking into a visit to Morgantown.

Another new offer since the start of the contact period is Loganville (Ga.) Grayson 2022 athlete Terian Williams. One of the more versatile athletes in his class, the 5-foot-11, 175-pounder could slide in at spots all across the defensive secondary and amassed the offer list to show for it.

Among those include Florida, Florida State, LSU, Tennessee and others.

But WVU is an offer that caught the attention of Williams, as he was able to get to speak to mostly the entire coaching staff to get a feel for what they were like. That included WVU head coach Neal Brown.

“They seem like great coaches and bring a good attitude to the team,” he said.

Like Wright, Williams is planning to make it to Morgantown when he can and is excited to see what else could come with the process as things continue to develop.

Those are just two of a number of new scholarship offers that have been extended and many more will be sent out in the coming weeks and months. Still, even with the 2021 class still being assembled, the Mountaineers can now wade into the waters of the next class, as well.
