Burglars chased out of home by resident

One of four arrested, stopped by an off-duty University Police officer

One of four alleged burglars was arrested on Wednesday after breaking into a home on Chloe Lane.

William F. Belt Jr. is charged with burglary by the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department.

A deputy responded to the burglary just after midnight on Wednesday morning, according to a criminal complaint. The caller said four people with bandannas on their faces broke into his home.

The resident said he chased the burglars out of his house with a baseball bat and was following one of them down Summers School Road, according to the complaint.

An off-duty University Police officer had the resident and Belt stopped on Summers School Road when deputies arrived, the complaint said.

Belt admitted he was at the scene but said he didn’t go inside or break anything, the complaint said. He was carrying a black bandanna in his pocket and was identified as one of the four by the resident.

Belt is being held in North Central Regional Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.
