Fair canceled; livestock auction goes virtual

The 2020 Monongalia County Fair has been canceled, but the youth livestock auction continues — albeit virtually.

The auction, sponsored by Joe R Pyle Realty and Auction Services, is available at joerpyleauctions.com, under “upcoming auctions.” Bidding will continue through Aug. 15, with the live virtual auction starting that evening at 6 p.m.

Animals to be auctioned have been raised by the youth of Monongalia County. All are members of local 4-H and FFA organizations and all began their projects long before the impacts of coronavirus were being felt locally.

“This year, our 4-H and FFA exhibitors have truly experienced trials and tribulations that go along with farming,” Monongalia County Fair Board President Rob Maxwell said.

The Monongalia County Youth Livestock Committee has agreements with meat processors, so there will not be a wait for those who purchase the animals.

The options for handling post auction will be:

  • Send to Processor — Haines Meat Processing, Working H Meats, Hungarian Smokehouse, Harry’s Custom Meats and A+.
  • Donate the animal to be resold to benefit the scholarship fund or livestock barn fund.
  • Return to exhibitor — You may choose to allow the exhibitor to keep his/her animal.
  • Buyer pick-up — You may wish to pick the animal up at the Monongalia County Fairgrounds at Mylan Park at 9 a.m. on Aug. 16.

The Monongalia County Fair Board Livestock Committee will make arrangements to bid on and purchase animals for you in the event you are unable to participate in the auction. The committee can also arrange to transport the animal you purchase to a local meat processor at your request. You will be contacted by a representative of the committee to determine the handling of your purchased livestock.

After the auction, buyers will receive an invoice from the Monongalia County Fair at the email address registered with  the auction.  All invoices past 30 days from the close of the sale will be assessed a late fee per month unless arrangements have been discussed.

You will have the option to pay with check, cash or credit card.  All other payments may be mailed to Monongalia County Fair Youth Livestock, 270 Mylan Park Lane Suite 250 Morgantown, WV 26501.
