Verna Demick

Verna Mae Demick, 85, of Newburg, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2020, at Sundale Rehabilitation and Long-Term Care. She was born on May 26, 1935, in Clearfield, Pa., to the late Harry Clyde and Valeska Ann Thomas Hatten.

Verna was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting, gardening, baking, ceramics and caring for her children and grandchildren. In her free time, she enjoyed playing the piano and guitar at Concord Church where she was a member. Verna actively served in the church for many years; leading Bible studies, attending revivals and teaching Vacation Bible School.

Verna is survived by her husband of 51 years, Robert “Bob” Lee Demick, whom she married May 3, 1969; five children, Connie McCarty and Marlin “Buck,” of Mount Juliet, Tenn., Julie Matthews, of Reedsville, James “Jim” Matthews and Gudrun “Goody,” of Autryville, N.C., Leigh Ann Demick, of Newburg, and Lisa Saurborn, of Morgantown; 11 grandchildren, Melissa Turchetta and Jason, Matthew McCarty and Marquita, Jodi Woloszyn and Billy, Jennifer Everly and Mike, John Curry, Jason Curry and Ginnie, Melanie Kohl and Paul, Marcel Grosshaeuser and Katherine, Fabienne Narron and Ricky, Emily Saurborn and Misty Braham; 17 great-grandchildren, Ryan, Kourtney, Michael, Lacy, Austin, Tristan, Luke, Gehrig, Madison, Nathan, Jaycie, Jayden, Christopher, Kayla, Taylor, Heidi and Chase; one great-great-granddaughter, Thea; three brothers-in-law, Fred Christensen and Jim Morgan, of Pennsylvania, Ron Mason, of Marusville, Ohio; sister-in-law, Dorothy “Dot” Everly and Donnie, of Kingwood; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Verna was the last surviving member of her family. She was preceded in death by siblings, Mona Christensen, Bob Hatten, Dorothy Morgan and Mary Carol Hatten. A special thank you to the Sundale family for all the love and support.

The family will receive friends at Bolyard Funeral Home from noon-6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, with proper distancing and face mask required. A Private Service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10 with Pastor Clinton Adkins officiating. Interment will follow at Pratt Cemetery.
