Mountaineer Area Robotics, is an internationally recognized high school robotics team based in north-central West Virginia looking for new members to participate in the 2020-21 season.

MARS strives to provide a purpose-driven creative outlet to its students through FIRST Robotics Competition, while inspiring a change of culture in rural communities through outreach with For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology  and STEM programs.

During the six-week build season, MARS designs, builds, wires, programs and markets 120-pound robots to compete across the country.

This year, MARS traveled to Myrtle Beach, S.C., to participate in the Palmetto Regional. MARS ranked third, placing as a regional finalist and was awarded Excellence in Engineering. Though further competitions have since been canceled due to COVID-19, MARS has continued to meet weekly through web communication services.

MARS does more than just build robots. The group is also looking for students interested in graphic design, presentations and STEM craft activities. Due to taking part in innumerable outreach events in the community, MARS was awarded the World Chairman’s Award in 2017, inducting the organization into the FIRST Hall of Fame.

MARS welcomes all students in grades 9-12. Anyone, regardless of extracurriculars, skill level or any other variable, is invited to attend practice — the team is willing to teach  all the necessary skills to excel in FIRST.

Any interested parent, student or volunteer looking for additional information about how they can participate in MARS or other youth robotics programs should visit MARSFIRST.org or contact MARS at MARS2614@gmail.com.
