Hazelton prison inmate dies

HAZELTON — A female inmate was found dead Thursday at USP Hazelton.

According to a press release from the prison press officer, at about 8:05 a.m. Thursday Jensy Janelle Mendoza was found unresponsive at the Secure Female Facility (SFF).

Responding staff immediately initiated life-saving measures and requested emergency medical services, and life-saving efforts continued. The inmate was subsequently pronounced dead by EMS personnel. Currently there are no indications that this death was related to COVID-19, according to the release.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation was notified. No staff or other inmates were injured and at no time was the public in danger, according to the release.

Mendoza, 33, was sentenced in the Western District of Virginia to a 36-month sentence for providing an inmate of a prison a prohibited object, false statements, distribution of buprenorphine, conspiracy to provide an inmate a prohibited object and conspiracy to distribute.

She had been in custody at Hazelton since Feb. 22.

SFF Hazelton is a low- security facility that currently houses 477 females.
