Dancing with bulls

Brookhaven fifth-graders had the chance to show off their moves Friday, when they came together for a ballroom dance at the elementary school.
For 10 weeks, 85 students worked with dance instructor Bill Duff to learn six ballroom dances, as well as a line dance.
“This activity encourages them to be accepting of each other and break down social barriers, as well as have good manners and interact with each other in a positive way,” said fifth-grade teacher Denise Evans. She, along with fellow fifth-grade instructors Hope Kelly, Melanie Gore, Megan Slavey and principal Davene Burks, coordinate each year to help students learn in an active, innovative way.
“We’re the only school in the county that does this,” Evans said, adding Brookhaven has offered the ballroom dance and instructional sessions for seven years. The Monongalia County board office foots the bill to pay Duff.
“The kids dressed up in tuxedoes and long dresses,” she said of Friday’s gathering. “They have a good time, and they’ve done an excellent job.”
