Warrant issued for phone scammer

The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department received multiple calls about a caller
posing as a member of its department.

Sheriff Perry Palmer considers this a scam and said the caller is not calling on behalf of him or his department.

The scammer, calling from 304-306-8900, identifies himself as Lt. Perry from the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department, indicates there is a warrant for the person on the other end of the line and they must make a payment with a green dot card or they will be arrested, Palmer said.

“We do not ask for money for warrants on the phone,” Palmer said.

In fact, paying money to get out of an arrest warrant isn’t a thing and deputies will never ask for money over the phone for any reason, Palmer said.

A real deputy called the scammer’s number, identified himself and the person hung up, Palmer said.

Anyone receiving a call like this should hang up and report it to local law enforcement, Palmer said. He also suggested if someone doubts the legitimacy of any call, hang up and call an official number found in the phone book, on a bill or on a company or agency’s website.
