MFD bids bittersweet farewell to firefighter

Chief Mark Caravasos couldn’t remember the exact date Jimmy Lipscomb started with Morgantown Fire Department, but he won’t soon forget working with the 21-year veteran, who’s retiring as firefighter.

“I’ve known Jimmy since high school. I ran with Star City when he ran with Brookhaven,” Caravasos said, referring to two area volunteer fire departments. “He’s a great guy — very knowledgeable.”

Lipscomb joined the department Feb. 15, 1999, Caravasos discovered after
receiving his paperwork.

Before then, he worked at the city airport and, the chief said, is a lifelong member of Brookhaven VFD. He’s also been a member of the county and MFD’s hazardous materials teams.

The fire department held a pizza party Thursday at North Side Fire Station in honor of Lipscomb.

“He’s a valued member of the team, and we’re gonna miss the guy,” Caravasos said. “But it’s a well-deserved break. Although, I’m sure he’ll stay active. It’s bittersweet, but I’m very happy for him. … He’s in the family.”
