George Prentice

George Herbert “Grandad” Prentice, 94, of Morgantown, passed away Friday, Feb. 14, 2020, at Mapleshire Nursing Home, surrounded with his loving family.

He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Betty Lou Spiker Prentice; sisters, Betty Lou Bartges and Mary Grace Cunningham; parents, Opal Prentice Martin and George H. Prentice Sr.; stepfather, Howard Glenn Martin; and grandson, Wilbert Austin Jr.

George is survived by his daughters, Mary Edith (Allen) Johnson, of Morgantown, and Mildred Mitzi Jean (Doc) Austin, of Fort Wayne, Ind.; sister, Margy (Don) Plum; nephews, Zack Plum, of Gladesville, Dick Richard (Charise) Bartges, of Hempstead, Texas; grandchildren, Roy G. Utt Jr. and companion Sherri Lerch, of Rome, Ga., Beverly Kay Bracken, of Morgantown, Doug Aaron (Karen) Johnson, Bradley Allen Johnson and companion Cathy, all of Morgantown, Jody Lynn (Todd) Cooper, Pam Jean (J.R.) Griffetts, Todd Michael (Liz) Austin, all of Fort Wayne, Ind.; 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Dad served in WWII from 1943-1946, where he was Sergeant Leader of Company K 35th Infantry and Tropic Lightning 25th Infantry Divisions. Dad was active after retiring with A & P of Morgantown and Kingwood at the age of 58. As he would say, “Never let the grass grown under your feet.” He loved to socialize with friends, have a good meal and laugh and joke with all.

Friends may gather at McCulla Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, and also at 10 a.m. Tuesday until the 11 a.m. funeral service with Pastor Kevin Cain officiating. Burial will follow at Gladesville Cemetery with full military honors conferred by Westover VFW Post #9916 and WVANG, Camp Dawson.
