Doris Gross

Doris Jean Gross, 95, of Morgantown, passed away peacefully on Tuesday,
Feb. 11, 2020, at her home, surrounded by family. She was born Oct. 5, 1924, in Morgantown, the daughter of the late Homer and Nell Windell Hiner.

Jean was a 1942 graduate of Morgantown High School and went on to graduate from Fairmont State Teachers College. She then married the love of her life, Wayne, a World War II veteran and life-long employee of Bell and C&P telephone companies. She taught for two years at Everettsville Elementary before beginning her family and her second career as a stay-at-home mother.

She flourished as a wife, mother and artist. She was a Cub Scout den mother, a member of the PTA and of the VFW Auxiliary. Jean blossomed as a member of the Morgantown Garden Club and was known for her flowering landscape and her herb and vegetable garden. She enjoyed cooking the Hiner family potato soup and hot cocoa from scratch. Throughout her life, she was busy with her activities, which included league bowling, dancing (line dancing, String of Pearls, ballroom and square dancing with her husband Wayne). She enjoyed her bridge club and teaching card games to three generations of family, then beating them at it. She was an avid fan of WVU football and especially loved WVU basketball. In her later years, she developed her artistic talents further as an accomplished painter and quilter.

In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death and greeted in heaven by her loving husband of 42 years, Franklin Wayne Gross, and her brother, Robert William Hiner and wife, Betty Gibson.

Jean is survived by her sons, Robert Wayne Gross and James Franklin Gross; daughters-in-law, Patricia Mulligan Gross and Sal Anne Beals Gross; grandchildren, Robert Wayne Gross II and wife, Karen Toth Gross, Molly Catherine Keith and husband, Bobby Douglas Keith; and great-grandchildren, Morgan Elyse Gross and Bailey Nicole Gross.

Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, and from 9 a.m. Saturday,
Feb. 15, until the 10 a.m. funeral service with Pastor Junius Lewis officiating. Interment will follow at East Oak Grove Cemetery.
