PREP ROUNDUP: Preston falls to North Marion 67-62

KINGWOOD, W.Va. — As the season winds down, North Marion trekked to Preston High to test another Class AAA team. The Huskies prevailed, coming back from an early deficit to deliver PHS’s 11th loss, 67-62.

The Knights (7-11) picked up an early 16-13 lead over North Marion (17-2) but a huge 22-point second quarter for the Huskies put them ahead 35-20 at the half.

Preston managed to fight with the Huskies in the third, tying them at 15-15, but North Marion managed to stay hot on their jumpers to stay afloat.

The Huskies were led by three players in double digits, Michael Garrett with 23 points, Timothy Murphy with 22 and Praise Chukwudozie with 12.

The Knights were paced by Nick Smith with 22 points and Jaden Fultz with 19. Austin Metheny was the final double-digit scorer with 10.

Preston returns to action on Saturday with a senior night home game against Hampshire. Tip is set for 6 p.m.

Freshman boys’ basketball

University 56, Brooke 17: University’s freshman team led by Zach Harman and Gavin Powroznik with 11 points each turned on the jets against Brooke on Wednesday, picking up its 10th win of the year.

Middle school basketball

Mountaineer 7s 70, Westwood 60: In one of the highest scoring middle school games in recent history, Demarcus Bandy netted 12 points for Mountaineer (9-7) as they charged over Westwood 70-60. Bardy was backed up by Logan Vance with 10 points.
Glen Brown logged 30 points in the loss and was backed up by Zach Demidovich with 11.

Mountaineer 8s 44, Westwood 32: Mountaineer picked up its second win of the night over Westwood, 44-32. Mountaineer was led by Luke Hudsun with 10 points in the win, while Ethan Jackson paced Westwood with 15.
