Newburg Council gets update on Independence water project

NEWBURG — Mayor Edgar Fortney said town attorney Sheila Williams is sending a title of opinion letter to Region VI as the next step in the Independence water project.

Earlier, Fortney said all 10 rights-of-way needed for the project to continue have been signed.

A title of opinion documents the ownership of property, based on the attorney’s research.

Town Clerk Janet Adams asked council if it would consider a website. She said it would allow the town to post notices and allow customers to pay water bills online.

The website, through the town’s current billing system, Angstrom, would cost the town $300 per year. Customers paying online would be assessed a fee.

The town uses Angstrom’s billing system to send out water bills but would have to set up a site to take online payments.

No decision was made. Councilwoman Rhonda Myers suggested “taking baby steps” and becoming more familiar with the system before setting up a page.

In other discussions:

  • Town employees will be removing manhole lids soon to find and patch leaks. They will also be doing smoke testing this spring.
  • Council approved paying $300 to have the town hall painted. Council voted to buy the semi-gloss paint for the project.
