First 2020 arrests show DUI, shoplifting

A DUI and a grand larceny charge were the first misdemeanor and felony charges of 2020 in Monongalia County.

Alexander J. Landerfield, 22, of Oakdale, Pa., is charged with DUI by the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department and Samantha S. Swaney, 39, of Morgantown, is charged with grand larceny by the Granville Police Department.

Deputy Seth Fitzwater saw Landerfield swerve off the road and slightly into a ditch before recovering while traveling on Stewart Street on New Year’s Day, according to a criminal complaint.

The deputy then stopped Landerfield and could “immediately” smell alcohol on him, the complaint said.

A field sobriety test was conducted and Landerfield showed signs of impairment on all three tests and failed the preliminary roadside breath test, the complaint said. After being arrested and taken to the sheriff’s department where he was observed for 20 minutes, Landerfield was breath tested again and had a .211 BAC.

Granville Police arrested Swaney after being called to Target for a shoplifting in progress, a criminal complaint said.

A Target loss prevention employee pointed out Swaney — who was exiting the store — to officer R. Maldonado, who stopped her right outside of the store’s exit doors, the complaint said. The employee said she saw Swaney cut security cables from three computers and put them, and other merchandise, into her cart.
Swaney then walked past the registers without paying for the items, the complaint said

The total amount of the merchandise Swaney is accused of stealing is $1,184.79, according to the complaint.
