West Virginia offensive lineman Josh Sills enters transfer portal

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Another day, another name in the transfer portal for the West Virginia football team. Offensive lineman Josh Sills entered the portal Tuesday evening, a day after running back Martell Pettaway did the same.

It was first reported by ESPN’s SEC Network.

Sills, a redshirt junior, played in just two games this season, bouncing around from guard and center. After the Missouri game in Week 2, Sills had surgery that ended his year. He was supposed to be the most experienced interior linemen and his absence was felt — redshirt freshmen James Gmiter and Briason Mays, as well has junior Chase Behrndt, got a majority of the snaps at guard and center.

Sills replaced an injured Grant Lingafelter in the 2017 season-opener against Virginia and became a mainstay on the offensive line over the next few years. He had 24 starts — 23 at guard and one at center.

Even though he didn’t play in 10 games this season, Sills’ was missed. The interior line struggled, but the Mountaineers got a glimpse of what life will be like without Sills.

With Wednesday marking the beginning of the early signing period, the commitments of juco transfer Tairiq Stewart and 3-star prospect Jordan White came at the right time. Stewart announced he was headed to WVU on Monday, while White did the same Sunday. Both are expected to send in their Letters of Intent on Wednesday.

Fairmont Senior’s Zach Frazier and juco transfer Jacob Gamble are also offensive linemen committed to the Mountaineers.

Sills marks the eighth scholarship player to enter the transfer portal since preseason camp: safeties JoVanni Stewart and Kwantel Raines, receivers Ricky Johns and Tevin Bush, tight end Jovani Haskins, safety Rashon Lusane, and Pettaway.
